Linguistics

General admission requirements

Evidence must be submitted of credits in general linguistics, linguistics or a specific philology to the extent of at least 60 C, including a total of at least 36 C from the areas of syntax, phonology, morphology, semantics, empiricism (language courses in philological subjects, psycholinguistics and/or corpus-based data acquisition); academic achievement in language practice can be considered as relevant for the MA programme up to 12 credits.

Specific language requirements: Demonstration of sufficient English language skills on the level C1 by earning the minimum required grade on an internationally recognized test:

a) UNIcert®: min. certificate UNIcert® III; b) NULTE certificate: min. level C1; c) Cambridge English Scale: min. 180 points; d) „International English Language Testing System” (IELTS Academic): min. level 6.5; e) „Test of English as a Foreign Language, internet-based test” (TOEFL iBT): min. 93 points; f) Global Scale of English (Pearson Academic): min. 76 points. g) Other certificate on the level C1 or higher (CEFR).

As a rule, the last test (a-f) must have been taken no more than three years prior to submission of the application for admission to the Master's degree programme (date received).

Applicants, who successfully completed a course of study, which is taught in English as well as certified C1 level in diploma supplement according to Common European Framework of Reference are excempt from this requirement.

Also excempt from this requirement are applicants, whose mother tongue is German or who can provide a proof of their language proficiency in German on C1 level (DSH-II). These applicants have to provide proof of their language proficiency in English on B2 level by earning the minimum required grade on an internationally recognized test: a) UNIcert®: min. certificate UNIcert® II; b) NULTE certificate min. level B2; c) Cambridge English Scale: min. 160 points; d) „International English Language Testing System” (IELTS Academic): min. band 5.5; e) „Test of English as a Foreign Language, internet-based test” (TOEFL iBT): min. 59 points; f) Global Scale of English (Pearson Academic): min. 59 points; g) Other certificate on the level B2 or higher (CEFR).

As a rule, the last test (a-f) must have been taken no more than three years prior to submission of the application for admission to the Master's degree programme (date received).

If applicants have spent at least one year studying or working in an English-speaking country or successfully completed a course of study of at least two years in the English language (proof required), that is also adequate.

Paper documents are not required. Admission and rejection letters will be sent approximately in the middle/at the end of July 2024. From the middle until the end of September 2024 there will be an additional application period. International students who need a visa have to apply during the regular application period.
