East Asian Studies/Modern Sinology

General admission requirements

General admission requirements:

Evidence of credits in sinology to the extent of at least 120 C must be submitted, including credits totaling at least 24 C from at least two of the following areas: history, religion, politics, society, philosophy, linguistics, economy or law of modern China.

Specific language requirements:

1) Applicants with a native language other than modern Mandarin Chinese must possess sufficient knowledge of modern Mandarin Chinese. Evidence of sufficient language skills is to be furnished by passing an examination on level 5 of the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) test or Band B Level 3 of the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL); instead of an HSK or TOCFL test certificate, the necessary language skills can also be proved by successful participation in the language aptitude test offered by Georg August University.

2) Applicants whose mother tongue is not English must demonstrate proficiency in the English language. Applicants shall demonstrate the required English proficiency by earning the minimum required grade on an internationally recognised test (listed below) or by comparable achievements: a) UNIcert®: min. certificate UNIcert® III; b) NULTE-certificate: min. level C1; c) Cambridge English Scale: min. 180 points; d) „International English Language Testing System” (IELTS Academic): min. Band 6.5; e) „Test of English as a Foreign Language, internet-based test” (TOEFL iBT): mind. 93 points; f) Global Scale of English (Pearson Academic): mind. 76 Punkte; g) Demonstration of English language skills on level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Applicants who have spent at least one year studying or working in an English-speaking country are exempt from these requirement. Moreover, the exemption applies to applicants who have successfully completed a course of study of at least two years in the English language (proof required) as well.

A certificate of proficiency in English is required for admission.

Paper documents are not required. Admission and rejection letters will be sent approximately in 4 - 8 weeks.

Unfortunately, module packages (minor subjects) are currently not a part of the process. Nevertheless, you can submit an application for the Joint Honours MA (42 C + module package(s)) now, but you will receive a letter of admission or refusal for the Single Honors MA (78 C). For a possible transfer into the Joint Honours MA you will receive a second letter before the start of the semester (if you have been admitted to the Single Honors MA).
