North American Studies

General admission requirements

Admission requirements: Applicants need to provide a) proof of 50 credits obtained in the field of American Studies/American Literature or b) proof of 50 credits obtained in the field of English/English Philology including at least 14 credits in American literary and cultural history or American literary and cultural theory or c) proof of 50 credits obtained in the field of General Literatures/Comparative Literatures or Social Science or History including at least 14 credits from courses pertaining to the study of North America.

Language requirements: Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in the English language. Applicants shall demonstrate the required English proficiency by earning the minimum required grade on an internationally recognised test:

a) UNIcert®: min certificate UNIcert® III; b) NULTE-certificate: min. level C1; c) Cambridge English Scale: min. 180 points; d) „International English Language Testing System” (IELTS Academic): min. Band 7; e) „Test of English as a Foreign Language, internet-based test” (TOEFL iBT): min. score 100 points ; f) Global Scale of English (Pearson Academic): min. 76 points; g) the successful completion of a course of study, which is taught in English as well as certified C1 level in diploma supplement according to Common European Framework of Reference. As a rule, the last test (a-f)/study degree (g) must have been taken no more than two years prior to submission of the application for admission to the Master's degree program (date received).

The proof of the required English proficiency have to be submitted not later than on 30th September (application for winter semester) and not later than on 31st March (application for summer semester). An admission without this proof is not possible.

Paper documents are not required. Admission and rejection letters will be sent approximately around the days of the start of lectures. International students, who need a visa, can also apply during this period, but the admission will be postponed to the winter semester 2023/24.
